Case Study on Biomimicry in UX
Biomimetics or biomimicry is the imitation of the models, systems, and elements of nature for the purpose of solving complex human problems.
It is related to sustainability, sustainable development, circular economy, natural capitalism, corporate sustainability.
Problem
In 1989, Japan bullet trains were faster like 170 miles per hour fast, but they produced loud noise when they were exiting tunnels, due to this many residential areas were facing a huge problem.
Process
Eiji Nakatsu from the engineering team was a bird watcher. He realized studying the flight of birds could bring his train, and us, into the future and designed different components based on different bird features.
One of the key features of bullet train was built with the help of Kingfisher. The unique shape of kingfishers allows it to attack its prey under water barely making a splash.
Solution
This helped engineers to design bullet train 10% faster, used 15% less electricity and stayed under the 70 db limit in residential areas.
Biomimicry
This concept is known as Biomimicry, where it imitates the natural world when the design solution is physical.
